Ola licensed Under the Karnataka On-demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules

BENGALURU: Ola is the first technology-based taxi cab aggregator which acquired a licence under the Karnataka On-demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules 2016. The startup hailing from Bengaluru acquired the licence by registering and providing the particulars for 100 cabs.

Rame Gowda, Transport commissioner confirmed the development while speaking to ET. Ola will have to amend by the rules for the remaining cars in its fleet. "Ola has to install GPS, digital meter in rest of their cars, only after these requirements will they receive the license," said Gowda. This event has ceased the lasting scuffle between Ola and the transport department in the state. The department had taken over 3,000 Ola cabs under the initiative of its enforcement drive in the city over the past two months. The department figured that the aggregator rules that came into action on April 2 have been scoffed away by many aggregators, including Ola. It was followed by the department’s decision to restrict the ‘illegal operations’ by impounding cabs for a time period of a week or two along with a hefty fine on the cab drivers.

An anonymous Ola official averred that Ola has applied for a license in Delhi. A Transport Authority in Delhi affirmed to ET that Ola had applied for a license, furthermore he expected Ola to get hold of a Delhi license by next two weeks. Apart from Ola, five more aggregators have applied for a licence in Karnataka–they are Ridz, Shreyas, TaxiForSure, Uber, and Welink. Joint Commissioner (enforcement) Narendra Holkar said that Uber had not submitted their documents to the transport department, heretofore; it has not received the license yet.

On Monday, Karnataka High Court had extended its interim order on recouping Uber's surge pricing up to Thursday. Uber had previously filed a petition challenging the Karnataka On-demand Transportation Technology Rules, 2016. The transport department declared that they would not impound cabs until the hearing came to a conclusion.
