Myths Debunked About Security And Privacy Of IOT
Bangalore: Internet of Things (IoT) is a micro-electromechanical system in which objects, animals or people are provided with unique identifiers with the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. It’s intelligent, proficient and secured.
IoT has the potential to impose improvements in many aspects of life. In this process of improvement, concerns for security and privacy are pivotal points to be noted. In the context of security and privacy, there are certain ‘myths’ that has developed around by Csoonline. These should be checked and considered.
Myth # 1: More security means less privacy, and vice versa.
In December 2014 at the IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Summit on Internet Governance, held in Brussles, the concern over security versus privacy was discussed. What came out at the end was – Security and Privacy are two different concepts. Technically, they have common features and they complement each other.
Privacy means providing information into a system without being personally disturbed. Security is about protecting own’s content. However, both security and privacy share common features. The commonalities include dependence on encryption. Again both privacy and security can end in failures. So finally for the technical team, security versus privacy does not have any scope to explore. As per traditional norms, there can be 100pct security with no functionality. So a cost effective practical trade off must be found.
