Google to Test Balloon-Powered Internet in India
BENGALURU: It has been decades that human first got access to internet, which might give you a misconception that everyone is connected but on contrary two thirds of world’s population have no internet access till date. Internet giant Google has been conducting experiments to find a solution to the world’s connectivity and after all years of hard work they found ‘Balloon’, inputs from PTI.
Google’s Project Loon is all about innovating new ways to provide internet access and ‘Balloon’ is the result. These big balloons travel to the edge of the space floating at a height of 20km above earth’s surface. This is designed to connect people in rural and remote areas. When a disaster happens, it is not easy to get back all the connectivity and at this time Balloons come handy that can bring back the connectivity of people.
Project Loon began in June 2013 with an experimental pilot in New Zealand, where a small group of Project Loon pioneers tested Loon technology. The results of the pilot test are used to improve the technology in preparation for the next stages of the project. It has been tested in New Zealand, California and Brazil.
Very recently, Google approached Indian government to set up the Loon project and drone-based internet transmission and initially the plan was to partner with BSNL for testing this technology. It has the potential to replace mobile towers as it can directly transmit signals on 4G mobile phones using this technology.
Google says that each balloon can provide connectivity to a ground area of about 40km in diameter via 4G or LTE. Project Loon partners with telecommunications companies to share cellular spectrum that enables people to access internet from their phones and other LTE-enabled devices from everywhere. Google uses solar panel and wind to power electronic equipment in the balloon throughout the day.
