Google Comes Up with the App 'Motion Stills' to Turn Live Photos into GIFs

BENGALURU: There is a saying that, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Keeping that in mind, Google has recently unveiled its latest iOS app named ‘Motion Stills’ which helps in turning Live Photos captured on an iPhone into Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) or QuickTime multimedia format (.mov) clips. The app acts as a virtual camera operator for an iOS user’s Apple Live photos, a feature that brings still photos to life by capturing the moments before and after the photo is clicked. It will also enable users to combine multiple video clips to make a movie montage.

In a blogpost, the company mentions that its video stabilization technology in the app freezes the background into a still photo, as well as helps to create sweeping cinematic pans. The app also ensures that the GIFs can be shared easily with friends and relatives via messaging or social media. On how the algorithm works the firm states, “Our algorithm uses linear programming to compute a virtual camera path that is optimized to recast videos and bursts as if they were filmed using stabilization equipment yielding a still background or creating cinematic pans to remove shakiness.”

For those who are into the habit of shooting videos, the algorithm helps in identifying objects that are moving in the foreground and keep them separated from all the movement that is taking place in the background. Another positive aspect of the app is that it works without using mobile data, so once the user is granted the permissions, they are good to go.  There is also the provision of integrating the app into products like Google Photos, if users like the functionalities provided in the app. Motion Stills is available on the App Store and can be downloaded for free.
