Google And Facebook Increase Privacy To Protect Users
BENGALURU: When Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook, the company saw a plethora of anti-privacy issues over the years, which ultimately led some people to leave the social portal. Online privacy is the need of present generation and major IT companies like Facebook and Google are finally stepping up and giving their users what they should have got before the National Security Agency (NSA) came into news for violating the privacy of a common man.
Recently, two big companies, Google and Facebook introduced advance privacy features to help protect their users from becoming the victim of this new-age menace. In its blog post, Facebook confirmed that it is introducing a new feature that makes use of OpenPGP protocol for sending messages securely by applying encryption.
Due to the complex mechanism of applying OpenPGP protocol in sending emails, not many people used it in their day to day life. However, as per the latest statistics, Facebook has over 1.44 billion users and enabling them to share encrypted messages in an easy way will stop Security Agencies from secretly spying in the user’s data without their permission.
In a similar fashion, Google has introduced few security features that will definitely help in keeping the private data away from online threats. The company introduced Privacy Checkup as well as Security Checkup, which helps the user to take the control of the online information all by himself.. Google is known to have a lot of web applications that generates terabytes of data as people generate more content online.
The Privacy Checkup consists of YouTube Search History as well as Watch History, Web & App Activity that has a of history of those search strings that the user has searched on Google Search, Maps, Now and many more products. It also gives complete control of the Location History, Device Information, along with Voice & Audio Activity too. On the other hand, Security Checkup allows the user to keep track on the connected devices and manage app permissions, which require personal information from Google servers.
In this digital age, companies are being pushed forward to stay ahead in competition. Such an example was seen at Google I/O 2015, when Google launched the new platform for Internet Of Things (IoT) products, “Brillo”, which allows the user to control home appliances through their Android Smartphone. Similarly, Apple may also unveil HomeKit similar to the Brillo as both are platforms for controlling IoT products. However, with IoT, the need for privacy and security also increases and more security and privacy features will be required in order to live in a safer online world.
