Facebook 'Trending Topics'-In Hands of Contractors or Algorithms?

BENGALURU: The ‘Trending Topics’ started showing in Facebook’s newsfeed since 2014 and these topics supposed to be headlining the latest news across the world determined by a software formula or algorithm that identifies topics that have spiked in popularity on the site. However, Gizmodo reported that the editors are directly controlling the “Trending Topics” feature during the process of topic selection process, reports by ET.

According to the Gizmodo reports, Facebook downplays conservative news subjects and works like a traditional news firm with human intervention at every stage of news selection for 'Trending Topics'. After The Guardian published a copy of Facebook’s “Trending Review Guidelines”, the fact is revealed that a team of news curators is operating to choose which topic will be displayed in the tending news widget.

After these allegations, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg invited "leading conservatives and people from across the political spectrum" to discuss recent reports that its "Trending Topics" feature is biased against conservatives. Further, the company said that topics that can be included in the trending module are first filtered by software and curator team ensures that displayed stories are not biased. Zuckerberg also conveyed, "I want to have a direct conversation about what Facebook stands for and how we can be sure our platform stays as open as possible."

With the buzz and doubt about the transparency of FB’s 'Trending Topics', this section is still viewed by most of the users and Facebook will surly try to remove all the allegations as soon as possible.
