Facebook Shuts Down Notify App, Will Integrate Features Into Other Products

BENGALURU: About seven months ago, Facebook had launched its latest application, Notify. The app allowed its users to access some of the popular news publishers. But in a recent announcement made, by the social media giant, it was publicized that this application would be shut down, as reported by The Times of India Tech. All the notify users have been informed with a notification alert about the same. It was also mentioned in the alert that some features and parts of Notify will be transitioned into the organization’s other product.

The application was launched in November 2015 with the purpose of keeping the users on top of the latest news update. The users were given access to a list of some of the popular news publishers from where they can subscribe to their favorite publishers. The users would then receive push notifications from these publishers every time a news piece was published by them. Custom alerts for specific sub-topics could also be set up by the users.

The app was launched as a competition to the Twitter's Moments app. Though the reasons behind the closure of the app was not cleared by Facebook but the company told TechCrunch website that the functions of this app will be integrated with other Facebook products like the Messenger app. "Since launching Notify, we've learned a lot about how to make notifications as timely and relevant as possible and we heard from people using the app that Notify helped them stay informed about things they cared about throughout the day," said the company. "With more than 900 million people using Messenger each month, we think there is a great opportunity for publishers to reach even more people interested in real-time updates from their favorite sources."

Facebook’s Messenger app has been highly successful with 900 million monthly active users in April this year. The firm has been trying to make its Messenger app more feature-rich to bring additional users to the platform. Featured like games, gifs, and expanding stickers etc. has already been added by the organization in their Messenger app and with Notify’s functions to be integrated in Messenger, an increase in users’ count can be expected.
