9-year-old Bangalore Boy Creates an App for Waste Management

Bangalore, January 7, 2019: Plastic waste management has become a menace not only in India but the world at large. Due to rapid urbanization and growing population, the issue of domestic waste not being treated correctly is becoming the cause of various harmful diseases. To fight this menace, 9-year-old Sean Solano Paul from Bangalore has created the Trash Sorter app that educates people about the importance of separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. With this app, he aims to educate others and spread awareness on reducing, recycling, and reusing waste properly.

One day on his way to school (National Centre for Excellence, Bangalore), he witnessed the struggle faced by municipality workers to segregate waste for recycling. Sean, who has been learning to code on the WhiteHat Jr platform for the past 5-6 months, wanted to utilize his learning to create an app to solve this problem. He is confident that it will help everyone understand the importance of segregating waste and disposing it in the correct manner.

“Kids now a days have an evolved sense of right and wrong, and they want to contribute in their own way to address issues in our society. Kids as young as 6-year-old can start to learn coding to prepare them for the future and like Sean, we are already seeing many young kids creating some extremely creative, high utility digital applications that will make a long-term impact on the world.”, said Karan Bajaj, Founder and CEO, WhiteHat Jr.

Another example is of 10-year-old Sajan from Chennai who noticed that due to lack of playing spaces, the lifestyle of kids has become increasingly sedentary over the years. They spend more time indoors, which has led to various health concerns at an early age. To tackle this challenge, he has created the Health Check app, which help kids to track their daily activities and encourage them to indulge in physical exercise, restrict mobile usage, and eat a balanced meal.

7-year-old Siddhanth Nair from Hyderabad has created the Nutrition App, which helps to record and calculate nutrition kids are getting in their tiffin box. It can help parents to plan a healthy tiffin for children which has the right amount of macro nutrients like proteins and vitamins.

All these kids are learning to code on WhiteHat Jr, an EdTech startup that teaches coding to kids between 6 to 14 years of age. Teaching cutting-edge curriculum on technologies like AI, robotics, machine learning and space tech, the startup aims to harness natural creativity of kids and shift their mindset from consumers to creators at an early age. After seeing great success for its online platform, the company is working to bring its AI and robotics coding curriculum to schools across the country.

It has started a program where top 1% of kids on the platform will have a chance to get an all-expense paid trip along with one of their parents to Silicon Valley in USA to be mentored by top entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. They are also soon starting a 15 under 15 fellowship wherein WhiteHat Jr will help the top 15 kids on the platform incubate their own startups and provide a $15000 fellowship to them.
