Busted: The Most Wicked Cyber Attacks in Recent Times

The SWIFT Howler

SWIFT is a global financial messaging system used by 11000 banks to transfer billions of dollars every day. In February, hackers tried to steal 951 Mn US dollars from the Bangladesh Central Bank’s account in the New York Federal Reserve. The hackers plotted to transfer the money to locations in the Philippines and Sri Lanka. The Philippine part was successful as the hackers were able to transfer about 81 Mn US dollars. But, the Sri Lanka part ended in failure when a typo detected oddities. The story has all the ingredients to be made into an exciting Hollywood heist movie. After the incident, SWIFT has admitted to a number of mistakes from its side and vowed to introduce new security measures.
