YouTube Introduces Smart Offline Feature for Indian Users


BENGALURU: YouTube launched its Offline video feature in 2014 that help customers to save videos for later viewing without any further utilization of data charges. However, sometimes even watching videos on YouTube leads to consumption of hefty amount of data, especially in developing countries like India where internet costs are sky high. To tackle the issue now YouTube has introduced a latest Smart Offline feature in Indian market that will download videos in night hours to leverage discounted offers by data carriers. As reported by The Indian Express website, the new Smart Offline feature is a smarter version of the previously introduced Offline function.

The company is introducing this feature only in India for Telenor and Airtel customers with further plans to bring it to all major Indian carriers for large section of users to access it. In addition, users can take advantage of the feature in the latest YouTube app version and only during the mobile data usage duration, while on Wi-Fi the option will not appear. YouTube in its official blog post has mentioned that- in India many operators are providing discounted data offers to subscribers for late night internet surfing. Therefore, the company is going to leverage these cheap data rates to enhance customer experience.

On the latest YouTube app version, the user only needs to click on the gray arrow, which will provide two options namely “Download Immediately” and “Save Overnight”. After choosing the latter option, the selected videos will automatically be downloaded in the night and will be ready to be watched that too in the restricted time-period. It also provides an option to schedule video download, providing more convenience to the users. The company is planning to expand this feature to other developing countries with similar connectivity plans.
