Why iOS 8 Requires 5GB Free Space To Download?

BANGALORE: Lately, there has been a confusion that arose among the users of Apple iOS 8 regarding the download space.

The system updates generally take up about 1 GB of space, whereas iPad and iPhones require 4.6 GB of free space before they can download iOS 8. This posed a big question to users whether it is an error.

For those who are worried that Apple’s latest iOS update could be slightly flawed and so it is taking all a lot of space, here is the answer—system updates need that kind of large space.

When a user is downloading a new system update like iOS 8, all the contents in it are stored in a compressed file. Once the download is complete, the device will start extracting that compressed file. Your iPhone or iPad needs enough storage to handle both the compressed file and all its uncompressed contents as the system reboots.

Along with that, it needs to be capable of storing the previous system version as well,–in this case, iOS 7–while the compressed system update and its uncompressed contents initializ.

Once the updation is complete, iOS 7 and the compressed file of iOS 8 will disappear, thus freeing up the space on your iDevice once again. Now, you can reload your device with all the movies, music, pictures, and apps that you must have backed up onto your computer or the cloud.

If one needs help in clearing out space from their iDevice, Apple has a solution for that. One can also install iOS 8 by plugging the device into your computer and syncing with iTunes, which is a process that won't require you to free up any extra space more than the size of the actual update.
