The Rise And Rise Of Internet Traffic In India

BENGALURU: Recently I visited one of my childhood parks but was surprised at its quiet ambience. I still remember that noisy park, and the mess we used to make when we were kids. Suddenly it’s all quiet! You can even hear your stomach crumble and your lungs completing the process of respiration. Sadly, outdoor play has now been taken over by the Internet. FB, games, YouTube and what not! What’s the use of going out when the world’s available on a 5-inch screen!

As more and more users have started using Internet as a source of news, views, and entertainment, internet traffic in India has also gone up and will be equal to a million DVDs per hour in 2020 according to TECH 2. In its 11th Visual Networking Index report, Cisco has shared that almost 69 percent of all networked devices will be mobile-connected in India by 2020 making Indian Internet traffic grow four-fold in 2020.

The report also states that the smart phones will account for 37 percent (702.1 million) of all networked devices in 2020, and smart phones will account for 37 percent (702.1 million) of all networked devices. It has been mentioned in the report that use of internet to will grow to be 6 fold in 2020 due to demand for higher video resolutions‚ more bandwidth and processing speed. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication will be another growth area and will become 12-fold.

As mentioned by the report, global public Wi-Fi hotspots will grow 7X, and home spots will grow to 423 million by 2020. Smart-phones will account to 21 percent (5.6 billion) of all networked devices globally and there will be 26.3 billion networked devices.

The report had some key findings associated with India as it states that by 2020, Indian internet traffic will be 249x compared to the volume of the entire Indian internet in 2005. By 2020, IP traffic will also grow up 4-fold and will be 5.6 Exabytes per month.

Along with this, the report also shares that Internet traffic in 2020 will be equivalent to 12 billion DVDs per year, 1 billion DVDs per month, or 1 million DVDs per hour, that’s 249x the volume of the entire Indian Internet in 2005.

It’s not a surprise to see the pace at which Indian Internet traffic has been mentioned to increase. Tabs, smart-phones, laptops, palmtops, and others, all devices offer an easy way to access the internet and hence increasing the masses’ infatuation towards it. But will this much excessive use of internet not hamper the health of the youth? Something to think about!
