Revealed: CCTVs Exploited to Launch DDoS

BENGALURU: Presently, organizations are still unaware of the threat magnitude looming around their IoT infrastructure. Hence there has been less focus on securing IoT comprehensively. But recently, it has been discovered that IoT devices such as CCTV cameras are being taken over by Lizard Squad’s LizardStresser program and transformed into a potent attack platform.

According to the report from the security company, Arbor Networks, Lizard Squad, a black hat hacking group, mainly known for their claims of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to disrupt gaming-related services, has been using Internet of Things (IoT) devices like CCTVs to launch DDOS attack against websites. Although usage of CCTVs to generate DDoS attacks might seem a bit strange, but often majority of CCTVs and IoT devices use shared hardware and software to minimize costs and installation complexity. Therefore, passwords are also shared amongst a device which makes them even more vulnerable to hackers, reports Tech 2.

Since its emergence in 2014 Lizard Squad has been infamous for targeting gaming services, especially Playstation and Xbox Live. Lizard Squad is also responsible for shutting down the entirety of North Korea's internet for a day. According to the reports of Arbor Networks, Lizard Squad's has been taking over thousands of CCTVs and IoT devices to generate DDoS attacks exceeding 400Gbps in bandwidth.
