Project Ara Modular Smartphones by Google to be made Available for the Public by 2017

BANGALORE: Global tech giant Google has announced that it plans to bring its pioneering venture of mobile phones with modular, replaceable parts to the market, by next year according to a recent media report. The team charged with the development of this technology, The Project Ara team also confirmed the reports on a technology website, by stating that they aim to make modular phones available to consumers next year. The Project Ara modular phones are going to be built on a simple concept of having one basic model, upon which all the other bits can be taken off and swapped as a buyer sees fit.

Various mobile components like battery, memory, display panels, sensors, keyboards, scanners and memory, can all be replaced and interchanged as and when required by users. Also, if a user is looking to upgrade to use a better camera, he can purchase one through Google’s dedicated store and replace the existing one with it. The system is expected to allow space for modules, and its prototypes are already available to show for select media personnel at the Google headquarters based out of California.

According to the technology, by telling Google to eject its camera module, a tiny latch inside the body of the device will move and if set face down on a surface, the module will be released for swap or upgrade. Google still needs to figure out getting module partners, who will want to be onboard, the project, as well as sort out its shipping requisites. A little slimming down on the overall look and feel would also provide a neater outlook.
