Pink + Purple = Fuchsia; Google Teases New OS on GitHub

BENGALURU: Google is planning to introduce a whole new operating system, named Fuchsia, and the open source project can currently be seen on Google Git as well as on GitHub. The description on GitHub for Fuchsia reads: Pink + Purple = Fuchsia (a new Operating System), and that’s it. So far, no further information is available on the fledgling OS. However, there have been many speculations about the OS’s capabilities and purpose.

Another aspect of the OS that has intrigued many observers is the kernel of the OS. Unlike Android or the Chrome OS, which are Linux based, Fuchsia is built on the Magenta kernel– a “medium-sized microkernel” that itself is based on a project called LittleKernel, according to The Verge. LittleKernel is mostly used in embedded systems and is described as "an SMP-aware kernel designed for small systems," on its GitHub page. Moreover, Google illustrates Magenta as a kernel for “modern phones and modern personal computers with fast processors, non-trivial amounts of RAM with arbitrary peripherals doing open ended computation.”

It is also interesting to note that Google has been testing Fuchsia on all sorts of devices including 32-bit and 64-bit ARM processors and even 64-bit PCs. The signs lead to many possibilities like a single “unified” OS for IoT, PCs, smartphones and embedded devices, or it could be a substitute for Android and Chrome. As of now, these are just two deductions from countless possibilities that are making the rounds in internet forums. Since it is Google, it’s better to prepare for the unexpected rather than giving into paltry assumptions.
