Now Viber on the End-To-End Encryption Bandwagon

BENGALURU: Free messaging app, Viber is rendering more privacy to its millions of users worldwide. The company has recently announced end-to-end encryption feature to its users, which will restrict eavesdroppers from intercepting messages and calls, reports The Economic Times.

The encryption will be applied to one-to-one communication conversations, group messages, and cross-platform messages. Users can encrypt their messages just by updating to the latest version of Viber. The company suggested that the change will rollout automatically over the next two weeks. Viber COO Michael Shmilov said that their team at Viber has been working hard to give their users more control over their private conversations. He adds, “We are taking another step in this direction by making private communication safer through end-to-end encryption, hidden chats and message deletion."

Viber users will receive a notification once their conversations have been encrypted; they can confirm their encryption status with a gray padlock on the app. "We have ensured each user has an individual cryptography key associated with his or her device, allowing them to benefit from an added layer of security," Shmilov said.

Besides end-to-end encryption, Viber also announced hidden chats, a security feature that lets users hide specific chats in their devices. This feature grants an extra level of privacy for users who might share one device with family members or colleagues.

Recently WhatsApp activated an end-to-end encryption to their billions of users worldwide. The users’ privacy has become the recent demand to every company. The need came into light because of the Apple and FBI dispute on sharing user’s information.
