Modi's Big Digital Drive: 2500 Cities To Get Free 4G-Level Wi-fi

BENGALURU: Modi envisioned India as developed nation with all the technological advancements in place. As part of this vision, as 2015 entered,  the Digital India initiative got a boost as many companies domestic and foreign came in full support of this drive. Many countries including U.S. extended help in making India digitally stronger and increase internet literacy.

Digital India is ready to roll out its mega plan starting with free availability of Wi-Fi connection in around 2,500 cities and towns in India. The initiative is being helped and backed by India’s state owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and the plan will see an investment of 7,000 crore as reported by Firstpost.

The internet service that will be given by BSNL will come free of cost and will be available to users of all mobile networks offering speed of 4G. There are limits to the free internet usage and exceeding the limit, the users have to pay according to the rates and data usage.

Those who have MTNL and BSNL connection, using internet in a different city will come with a nominal roaming charge. The cities that will get the facility include Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Bhopal, Jaipur, Patna, Indore, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.

Roping in BSNL and MTNL for this digital India drive, it will boost up the lost charm of these PSUs and help them generate profits. The plans are up to extend the Wi-Fi coverage to more cities across India by March 2017.
