Home Based Solid Waste Management System Launched


MADURAI: A home-based solid waste management scheme has beenlaunched here with the help of the NGO Exnora, ITC and the city corporation.

Under the scheme, organic waste from homes will be converted into nutritiousfertilizer.

The decentralized solid waste management was being launched in view of the fact that space will be a constraint in future for garbage yards, said G Mohan, local President of exnora, an NGO involved in various solid waste management programmes.

Awareness would be created abouthome based solid waste managementsolution in 1500 houses around meenakshi temple.

Each house would be given a composting apparatus costing Rs 400. Initially composting agent would be made available free of cost. Saw dust would be given to prevent bad smell and the manure could be used for home gardens, officials said.

The solid waste management system would help convert most organic waste from waste food and vegetable waste into useful manure, they said.
