Is Samsung Started Manufacturing Apple A9 Chips For 2015?

BENGALURU: Samsung is going to be the lead supplier of application processors for Apple next year. A recent survey, however, shows that the Korean company has come up with production of Apple A9 chipsets using a new 14 nm FinFET process with rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacture Company, contributing a supplementary supply. A report from an inside source said that the production of Apple A9 chip is under process in Samsung’s Austin Plant, reports NDTV Gadgets. The report claims that Samsung’s Austin plant was chosen on the Cupertino based company’s request.

The allegedly agreement is said to have helped Samsung to not only recover some of the foundry quantities it lost to TSMC with the A8, but also gain the upper hand with its 14nm FinFET technology.  Samsung and TSMC seems to be competing for Apple A9 lucrative processor’s contract after Apple in 2013 signed a multiyear deal with Taiwan’s TSMC to supply A-Series Processors for Apple’s iOS devices. It is assumed that Apple’s switch to TSMC has affected Samsung’s chip making business and hence the company is hoping that the 14nm process will bring back the iPhone maker and recover some of the losses.

Prior to the launch of the iPhone 6, Samsung manufactured all of Apple’s low power ARM processors at its factory in Austin. But starting with the A8 CPU in the iPhone6 and iPhone6 plus, TSMC was said to have taken over the bulk of responsibility.

A recent rumor emerging from Apple’s supply chain in china suggested that the Cupertino-based giant has plans to launch a new 4-inch model. The company is also focusing majorly on one hand operations and will also target‘femaleusers’.
