Google Translate Celebrates 10 Years of Success

BENGALURUGoogle translate is celebrating its 10th birthday. One decade of successful provision of free translation services of text, speech, images, we bites, or real-time video from one language to another. It provides a web interface and also mobile interfaces for Android and iOS, and an API that developers can utilize to create browser extensions and other software or applications. It was originally created by Franz Josef Och on April 28th, 2006.

Soon after the launch, Google translation service won an international competition for English–Arabic and English–Chinese machine translation.

The simple but fantastic idea began as a service with support for only 2 languages ten years ago. But now it supports a whopping 103 languages and serves over a staggering number of 200 million people every day.

In case you are travelling, or reading or say, trying to make a new friend, Google’s Translate–more than just an app– has helped connect and support individuals, communities, and organizations by bridging the barriers during difficult times, just like the one which was explored, witnessed and analyzed by Google recently, during the migration crisis–Syrian migration crisis to be precise.

A fascinating fact to know is that Google translates an astonishing 100 billion words on an average, on a normal day and around 500 million folks use Translate, mostly to perform translations between English and Spanish, Arabic, Indonesian, Portuguese and Russian.

To a surprise, Google Translates success has a silent guardian or you call it a backbone. Its success can also be credited to the Translate community. The Community helps the service get better by contributing new languages to the service.

Surprisingly, Google Translates success can also be attributed to the Translate Community that helps the service improve and even add new languages to the system. The community is assisting Translate to amend the accuracy of translating more uncommon and complex phrases. The Community also helps corroborate and back up the translations. Google confirms that few of the translations tend to go a long way.

When it comes to languages, there is indeed no other country which is more diverse and intricate than India. Google has definitely done a commendable job by supporting 22 Indian languages. Earlier this year, English to Hindi translation for the visual translation feature was added to the Google Translation service, adding more value to the service for Indians.
