Google Looks Beyond Cardboard 2.0 VR Headset

BENGALURU: The concept of Virtual Reality (VR) is embarked from the sci-fi movie Star-Trek, which they called ‘Holodecks’. To bring this technology to real world, Google introduced the ‘Google Cardboard’ headset for smartphones and thousands of applications. But Google has released its latest headset ‘Daydream’ which is a successor of its VR Cardboard to compete with HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. Showing the new VR in this year’s I/O Developer Conference, reports reveal that Google shuts down an internal project to create a high end standalone VR project.

The new VR model of Google is also called as ‘Cardboard 2.0’ that consists of a headband which has been designed with precision to properly fit. This headset is compatible with Daydream-certified smartphone which has Android N. This headset also features a controller, emulator and a remote which controls motion. A report from Recode says that the VR project started inside the X Research Lab of Google, with 50 employees creating a separate Operating System (OS) for the device that is unique from Android. And now this project is dismantled in favor of Android.

Additionally, a report from Engadget reveals that Google is eyeing to take Microsoft's HoloLens, a mixed reality headset, making it Google's standalone device. Google’s version of HoloLens will not require a computer or mobile to charge it. Also, the headset features a screen which offers good user experience, making even the real life boring! This version of VR will be more in-line with augmented reality systems, and will mainly focus on gaming.
