Facebook Still Top Social Network Among Teens


BANGALORE: Despite worries over whether the company was losing its cool factor, Facebook is still the most popular social networking site used by teens, according to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center.   71 percent of teens use the site, and 41 percent use it more than any other social networking site. The findings are good news for the company, which reported lower than usual levels of engagement by teenagers last year.

According to the report, this is because teens while teens are more diverse in their use of online social networking platforms today; there are more of them online. Three quarters of the teenagers surveyed used Smartphones, and 24 percent reported that they go online almost constantly.

The break-up of social media usage among teens is as follows: 50 percent of teens use Instagram, 41 percent use Snapchat, Twitter and Google+ are tied at 33 present, Vine at 24 percent and Tumblr at 14 percent.

The Pew Reseach Center survey was conducted between September and October of last year and between February and March of this year. It’s their first study in a new series examining teenagers’ use of technology

The Pew Research Center said that further studies would be conducted to determine exactly how teenagers use social media to facilitate their relationships.

The survey also discovered some gender-based differences in teen’s usage of social media. Girls use some social media sites, predominantly visually oriented ones, more frequently than boys. Just over 60 percent of girls use Instagram while only 44 percent of boys do. And while more than half of girls use Snapchat, just 31 percent of boys do.
