Attention All iPhone Users! Grab a Cardboard, Because YouTube Goes 'VR'!

BENGALURU: iPhone users all over the world are gearing up for a virtual adventure ride as Google releases Cardboard update to YouTube for iOS. Tasneem Akolawala for NDTV Gadgets360 says that the update will give iPhone users the ability to watch YouTube videos in VR mode through the Cardboard.

With just hours to go for the most awaited Google IO 2016, Google has surprised the Apple community by what is considered a welcome-move by fellow iOS users. The VR YouTube facility has been in and around the Android arena since November 2015, and now iPhone users can enjoy the virtual reality aspect as well.

Working in tandem with the 360-degree video support, and 360-degree live video streaming features—both of which were launched in March earlier this year—the VR is believed to uncover a new perspective to online video experience. Although Samsung’s Gear VR sports an advanced physique, and has many flamboyant features, Google’s Cardboard strikes as the more affordable and reachable Virtual Reality quotient for most Android users, and now iPhone users have joined the club.

The updated YouTube app for iOS allows users to select the ‘View Content in VR mode’ option by tapping on the Cardboard icon that is situated at the upper right corner of any video, according to Anu Passary of Tech Times. With a relatively lightweight storage size of 52.7 MB, the YouTube 11.18 version can transform two-dimensional video content into engaging and exciting 3D with a set of easy-to-follow steps.

Provided you have a Google Cardboard gear and an iPhone, which has the updated version (11.18v) of YouTube installed, you can open a video of your choice and play it. Spot the “More” icon at the top-right corner of the screen, and select “Cardboard” option. Now, all you have to do is place your phone device into the VR gear, and you are all set!
